Silver Lake was created by the damming of the Zumbro River. A power plant that was built in 1948, drains water from cooling towers into Silver lake which prevents the lake from freezing in winter time which is why the geese stay for the winter. Today, Silver Lake is home to an estimated
30,000 Giant Canadian Geese, the world’s largest winter concentration.
