Mayowood was build between 1910-1911 by Dr. Charles Horace Mayo.  “Doctor Charlie” as he was affectionately called, co-founded the Mayo Clinic along with his father and his brother Will.  Doctor Charlie and his wife, Edith, raised 8 children at Mayowood.  Edith was Rochester’s first trained nurse.

Mayowood lake is an artificial lake that Dr. Charlie created when he dammed the Zumbro River.  The dam generated hydro-electric power for Mayowood.  Charles William Mayo, or “Dr. Chuck” inherited Mayowood from his parents in 1939.  He and his wife Alyse also raised 8 children in the home.  Mayowood consists of 5 floors and about 55 rooms.  The furnishings are original in the home.

Mayowood was given to the Olmsted County Historical Society by Dr. Chuck and Alyse in 1965.  Mayowood is open for public tours:  May 10th-Oct. 19th:  Tues & Thurs.; Sat. & Sun.  Times:  11am, 12 noon, 1 pm, and 2 pm; Sunday 12 noon, 1 pm, and 2 pm.  Cost:  $10/adults; $5/children under 15.  Purchase tickets at Mayowood Gate, 20 minutes prior to tour or at Museum. Mayowood may be rented for weddings, receptions, and meetings.  It is located 7 minutes from Best Western Soldiers Field.
